Swiss Residents: How to Reclaim VAT on Your French Purchases in 2026

Swiss Residents: How to Reclaim VAT on Your French Purchases in 2026

French prices are lower to start with

Swiss residents cross the border to shop in France. Groceries cost 38% less on average. Cosmetics 31%. Clothing 23%. Alcohol 18%.

French VAT is lower, distribution costs less, and competition between retailers is fiercer.

Many cross-border shoppers don't know this, or gave up after a bad experience: on top of paying less, you can reclaim part of the French VAT on those same purchases.

How it works

Switzerland is not part of the European Union. As a Swiss resident, French law classifies you as a non-EU traveler. You can request a VAT refund on personal purchases.

The conditions

What you get back

Standard French VAT is 20%. On a €120 purchase, €20 is tax. The refund operator takes a cut from that amount.

Purchase amountVAT includedRefund (traditional operator, 55%)Refund (Belcova, 80%)
€150€25€13.75€20
€300€50€27.50€40
€500€83.33€45.83€66.67
€1,000€166.67€91.67€133.33

On a monthly grocery budget of €500 in France, the gap between operators is €21 per month, or €250 per year.

The process in 4 steps

1. At the store: ask for détaxe

Show your passport at checkout. The retailer creates a digital tax refund form with a barcode. Takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on the tool.

The store doesn't need a "Tax Free" sign. With Belcova, you ask for a receipt, photograph it in the app, and the form is generated. You can shop at any store in France.

2. At the border: scan the barcode

On your way home, stop at a border crossing with a PABLO kiosk. Scan the barcode. Green screen: validated.

The most convenient crossings from Geneva:

3. Swiss side: declare your goods

You still owe Swiss customs duties, regardless of your French VAT refund.

Swiss duty-free allowance: you can import up to CHF 300 of goods per person per day without paying Swiss VAT (8.1%). Above that, Swiss VAT applies on the excess.

Quantity limits: alcohol (5 liters max), meat (1 kg max), tobacco (250 units max). Check the FOCBS website for current rules.

The QuickZoll app handles the Swiss-side declaration. Enter your purchases in the app, pay any taxes due, and show the QR code at the border. You skip the line on busy Saturday afternoons.

4. Receive your refund

After PABLO validation, your refund arrives in 3 to 5 business days (Belcova) or 10 to 15 days (traditional operators) on your bank card.

The full picture

You spend €400 on groceries in France. The same items would have cost about CHF 560 in Switzerland (38% more on average).

Amount
Price in France€400
VAT refund (Belcova, 80%)-€53
Net cost€347
Equivalent price in SwitzerlandCHF 560 (€530)

Even after paying Swiss VAT (8.1%) on the amount above CHF 300, you save more than €150.

Why détaxe got easier

Two recent changes made the process more accessible:

Lower threshold (January 2021). The minimum purchase dropped from €175.01 to €100.01. More shopping trips qualify.

Smartphone scanning (December 2020). You can scan your form's barcode from your phone at the PABLO kiosk. No printing required if you use a digital operator like Belcova.

FAQ

I shop in France every week. Can I claim every time? Yes. No frequency limit. Each validated form triggers a refund.

I'm French but I live in Switzerland. Am I eligible? Yes. Détaxe depends on where you live, not your nationality. With proof of Swiss residency or a Swiss passport, you qualify.

Are groceries eligible? Yes. Food, cosmetics, clothing, electronics, alcohol (sealed). Any physical goods purchase qualifies if the threshold is met.

Do I need to keep items in their packaging? Not for everyday groceries. Luxury items and electronics should be accessible in your vehicle in case customs asks to inspect them.

What if I forget to scan at the border? You have 3 months to validate your form. Pass through a French border crossing or airport with a PABLO kiosk before expiry.

What's the difference between détaxe and QuickZoll? Two separate procedures. Détaxe refunds French VAT through a licensed operator. QuickZoll declares and collects Swiss VAT on imported goods. Both can apply to the same purchase.
